Mooring Lottery Lake Tahoe
Lakefront property owners in Lake Tahoe can now apply to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) for new moorings for the 2025 mooring lottery drawing. Moorings include buoys, boat lifts and boat slips. They began accepting submissions on December 1, 2024, and will accept submissions until January 31, 2025 at 5pm.
This lottery is for new moorings and is not for lakefront piers, which will be held in June 2025. You can view information about the pier lottery here.
After the lottery submissions are received, the drawing will be scheduled in February. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria to enter the drawing.
If an allocation is received, a complete project application demonstrating compliance with TRPA requirements will be required. Only shoreline properties that adjoin the highwater line of Lake Tahoe are eligible for the mooring lottery.
About the Lottery
The Shoreline Plan, approved in 2018, placed a limit on the total number of moorings and piers allowed in the Lake Tahoe Region and established an annual lottery system for allocations.
Under the plan, TRPA conducts an annual lottery to distribute a limited number of allocations for new moorings, such as buoys, boat slips and boat lifts, until the cap on new moorings is reached. They can permit up to a maximum of 2,116 additional moorings.
According to the Shoreline Plan, TRPA’s allowable moorings are distributed from the following pools:
- 1,486 private moorings (buoys or boat lifts)
- 330 marina moorings (buoys or boat slips)
- 300 public agency moorings (buoys or boat slips)
Entries for the lottery can be submitted anytime from December 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025. All submissions received before the deadline will be considered equally. You will be contacted after the lottery drawing scheduled to take place in February, 2025, if you receive an allocation.
TRPA reminds applicants that the drawing is only for an allocation. If an allocation is received from the drawing, a complete permit application showing that all TRPA requirements can be met will be required.
